The future of Mt Gravatt TAFE remains in the balance nearly two years after the Palaszczuk Labor Government was elected promising to “save” Mt Gravatt TAFE.
In a response to a question on notice from Member for Mansfield Ian Walker tabled in Parliament yesterday, Labor Minister Yvette D’Ath said “the future of Mt Gravatt (TAFE) is still being considered.”
Mr Walker said that Labor has lied to the community on this issue, having previously accused the LNP of “closing the Mt Gravatt TAFE*”.
“Labor should be awarded a Certificate I in Hypocrisy for their statements on TAFE,” Mr Walker said.
“Annastacia Palaszczuk and Yvette D’Ath held a rally outside Mt Gravatt TAFE just days before the 2015 election claiming they would “save” our local TAFE services.
“Now nearly two years after the election this do-nothing Labor Government still can’t commit to the long-term future of Mt Gravatt TAFE – no wonder enrolments are falling.”
Mr Walker said that in May this year, Yvette D’Ath held a consultation meeting about TAFE assets at the Mt Gravatt TAFE.
“TAFE management confirmed that student accommodation, housing, or a complete sell-off were options being considered,” he said.
“Seven months later Labor has confirmed they are still considering the future of the site.
“Not only have Labor lied about TAFE, they have lied about asset sales.”
Mr Walker said that when in office, the LNP set TAFE Queensland up for success.
“We breathed new life into TAFE, giving it the freedom to be responsive, flexible and innovative,” Mr Walker said.
“While we talked up TAFE, Labor started a scare campaign claiming the LNP were going to close Mt Gravatt TAFE.
“Now they still can’t commit to its long term future, yet they blame the LNP for falling enrolments.
“At what point will Labor own up to its own failings?
“Our community deserves better.”
